In An Old Barn

Barn outside Lyons, CO

In an Old Barn
Tons upon tons the brown-green fragrant hay
O'erbrims the mows beyond the time-warped eaves,
Up to the rafters where the spider weaves,
Though few flies wander his secluded way.
Through a high chink one lonely golden ray,
Wherein the dust is dancing, slants unstirred.
In the dry hush some rustlings light are heard,
Of winter-hidden mice at furtive play.
Far down, the cattle in their shadowed stalls,
Nose-deep in clover fodder's meadowy scent,
Forget the snows that whelm their pasture streams,
The frost that bites the world beyond their walls.
Warm housed, they dream of summer, well content
In day-long contemplation of their dreams.

  1. I love this old barn, but it doesn't look like it could give much respite from the cold.

    1. It does look pretty drafty, but maybe it's open to the shorter side building that gives some warmth. Thanks for visiting.

  3. I took on almost just like this yesterday, but it had two cows in it. We got our first big snow of the year in VA. I decided on the sledding shots for Our World Tuesday.

    1. Thanks. I agree with you that California's scenery takes first place. Hard to beat an ocean and mountains in the same state. God bless.
