Meditation in Velvet

Taken July 2011 in Rocky Mountain National Park

Deer lose their antlers and must grow a new set every year (same with elk). A velvet covering (as you see on this buck's antlers) protects the antlers until they have fully developed. At that point the velvet sheds. Protein and minerals are needed for antler growth, in contrast to horns -- such as found on bighorn sheep -- which are made of keratin (like our fingernails) and only require protein for optimal growth. Horns are not shed; new growth is added on to the old.

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Thomas Obadiah Chisolm, Composer (1866-1960)

Wednesday Share - The Thaw Is On

Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado

It was a beautiful spring-like day in Estes Park yesterday.

The ice on the lake has been slowly receding the past week. You can still see the remaining white layer of ice in the photo's background -- sandwiched between the blue of the lake and the dark base of the mountain.

Wednesday Share - Fall River RMNP

"The trees reflected in the river—they are unconscious of a spiritual world so near to them. So are we."
 Nathaniel Hawthorne

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD
And whose trust is the LORD.
For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit."
Jeremiah 17:7-8

Creation Sings

Loch Vale, Rocky Mountain National Park

"By reading the scriptures I am so renewed
that all nature seems renewed around me and with me.
The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue,
the trees a deeper green.
The whole world is charged with the glory of God
and I feel fire and music under my feet."
-- Thomas Merton

Alberta Falls - Rocky Mountain National Park, Elevation 9,400 feet
I took this shot while hiking last July.  RMNP is about 10 minutes from my home.
I feel incredibly blessed to live here.

Early Morning Swim

Having Rocky Mountain National Park in my backyard (well almost) is a great blessing. One of my favorite places to photograph is Sprague Lake. I love the play of early morning light on the water. After shooting a series of photos one morning last fall, I headed back to our car. Suddenly I heard the bugle of a bull elk and I turned to see him wading across the lake. I ran back and snapped about 10 shots of the bull making his way to the shore. What a delight to photograph this magnificent creature!

Ernest Hemingway, The Complete Short Stories
